Overactive Bladder Physiotherapy in Norwich

Overactive bladder describes a pattern of sudden urinary urgency, usually with increased frequency and sometimes urge leakage or waking at night to pass urine. Symptoms can disrupt work, travel, sleep, exercise, and confidence outside the home.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can help you understand the pattern, reduce unhelpful urgency habits, and improve pelvic floor coordination as part of a safe bladder-retraining plan.

Assessment and treatment

Urinary urgency can have several causes. Ellie will ask about your bladder pattern, fluid intake, bowel habits, medication, menopause or prostate history, pain, infections, and relevant medical conditions. A bladder diary may help identify patterns.

Treatment may include:

Medical checks are important

Burning when urinating, fever, flank pain, visible blood in urine, recurrent infections, difficulty emptying, or a sudden major change in bladder function should be assessed medically. Physiotherapy does not treat infection or rule out other bladder conditions.

FAQ

Is overactive bladder the same as stress incontinence? No. Stress incontinence usually involves leakage with coughing, sneezing, lifting, or exercise. Overactive bladder centres on urgency and frequency, although both can occur together.

Should I drink less? Severely restricting fluid can irritate the bladder and cause other problems. Ellie can help you review the amount, timing, and type of drinks safely.

Can I retrain my bladder at any age? Many people can improve urgency habits and pelvic floor control. The plan is adapted to health, mobility, medication, and symptom severity.

Will I need an internal examination? No. It is optional and only considered when it would add useful information and you consent.
